East Devon Conservatives should turn to Galatians 6:7

Zorro doesn’t often turn to the Bible but given the events in East Devon over the past week I was reminded of what is written in Galatians 6:7 “..for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap”.

There must be a number of members within East Devon Conservatives, and in particular incumbent MP Hugo Swire and EDDC leader Paul Diviani, who are wondering what on earth they have unleashed politically. Anyone who has even the most fleeting of acquaintances with East Devon cannot have failed to have recognised that the electors are very unhappy, not only with some recent significant EDDC decisions and how the majority Conservative Councillors have treated their views, but also with the fact that our MP seems to have fallen asleep on the job.

So, when your elected politicians are found to be so wanting, what can, or should, the electors do?

Well, they can either shrug their shoulders and do nothing, which is a dangerous approach to adopt in a democratic society. Or they can join with others and set about trying to change things.

Many electors have clearly decided that it is the latter course of action that they have chosen.

Hence, we will see significant challenges to East Devon Conservative Councillors at the forthcoming local elections. The wall to wall local news coverage that East Devon Alliance http://www.eastdevonalliance.org.uk/ have received since at the beginning of the week they announced a coordinated approach to supporting Independent candidates across East Devon, is testimony to the popularity of the local call for change.

Equally, the launch last week of Independent parliamentary candidate Claire Wright’s

http://www.claire-wright.org/ election manifesto, shows that change, not just at council level, but also at parliamentary level is very much now an option.

So, as we enter the last 90 days until both our local and parliamentary elections, Zorro is heartened by the head of steam that has developed across East Devon to bring political change. It can’t come too soon!

So, returning to the biblical quote, do East Devon Conservatives realise what political anger they have unleashed by their actions and attitudes? One suspects that they may have had to start realising. But, do they care? Do they think that they have an unassailable political hold across East Devon? It is very much a time for them to reap what they have sown!
